Together with small manual lenses this thing is compact and lightweight, can handle everything from bright daylight to dark small clubs, has an absolutely silent shutter (if needed), and is able to dish out quality video if needed (emphasis on quality, not usability).When I first purchased the a7s’s older brother the a7r months ago I had no idea what I would use it for… other than a cheaper alternative for my Leica lenses. Having a higher dynamic range above iso 400 over every other camera ever manufactured is an absolute useless feature. We think we've worked out how you'd conclude that ISO 3200 is the native ISO (though we don't believe this to be the case).
The higher exposure latitude or dynamic range possible will be available while utilizing the image sensors at their native base setting. The a7S III also does away with recording time limits and incorporates HLG for direct HDR production as well as S-Log2/S-Log3 gamma profiles for advanced HDR production with editing. Sadly, there are compromises on both sides, but it leaves me very excited about the direction Sony is heading. Obviously this is just a simple comparison, but the a7r auto white balances warmer and I’ve noticed this throughout extensive use of both cameras.The three A7 models are otherwise close-to-identical in body design, controls, and virtually all features that don’t have a sensor component to them. I was able to recover a LOT of shadows from the SOOC file to allow for maximum dynamic range and it looks pretty good, but judging from my tests in the garage, the a7r files would have looked even better. The internal 1080p footage is recorded using the XAVC S format, a more consumer-friendly version of Sony's XAVC system. Speaking from personal experience with the adapters and a good selection of manual and AF lenses, the lack of Sony lenses is not a issue.
