About this deal

I know that there are many other parents who will relate to Can't Not Won't. It is a brilliant book full of true-to-life, heartfelt illustrations and writing from Missing The Mark. The following words come from her introduction to the book: Also in this story, Sid learns of hand and arm transplants and sees an opportunity to finally get rid of the prosthesis that has been a part of his life for fourteen years. He has always hated it and is willing to take the risk of the surgery for the possibility of having a flesh and blood left arm. Jo has many insecurities but the one thing she is sure of is getting involved with Janus romantically will destroy her reputation and then her business. Great story for those that like a slow burn romance with spicy payoff at the end and a nerd-perfect story line.

I have to say, first of all, DAMN! This book was sensational!” Pride Prejudice and Pups, Goodreads Reviewer I could tell you how the gossip columns roasted me, or how I wasn’t prepared for the limelight. But truthfully? I dropped my guard. And trusting someone like that? Well, that’s the worst thing you can do.I also learnt, once we were home and without the daily pressures and distress, that I had been putting on a brave face at those school gates, and that doing that for many years had taken its toll on my mental health. Janus is an owner of a huge tech business and seen by many as a sexpot, while Jo is a woman in tech just trying to make it. When they meet, so many things happen, and it is such a whirlwind. Major transitions such as moving school, returning to school during or after a serious illness of self or a family member, or a life-threatening event such as pandemic, fire or flood It wasn't. There wasn't anything really wrong with it but it just wasn't quite right. Sid seemed almost insipid and a bit lost in a situation that in previous novels wouldn't have fazed him at all. I guess he is older now and wiser and has a lot more to lose but he just didn't seem like the hard-bitten character I know and love. All parents and carers of children who are not 'fine' in school will recognise the experiences and feelings portrayed in this book. Wouldn't it be amazing if Can't Not Won't could make its way into education establishments or even the Department for Education to help with understanding from the family's point of view....

On the plus side, there was fascinating information on the technological advancements in limb replacement, both with mechanical, and now, actual limb transplants. The plot did have some very good twists. Even when you think Francis has made an error, it’s lovely to discover he hasn’t.

Many of Sid's old colleagues are no longer available to assist him but Chico Barnes still is. Chico is a great character and very helpful to Sid. Together the two of them investigate and come up with a plan to end the threat to Sid's life and family. The reasons children refuse to attend school are often complex and usually due to a combination of factors, rather than one single issue. These factors may include: Often attendance related issues overlap, so it is important to identify school refusal as early as possible. Typical school refusal behaviours The point of view changed between Jo and Janus. I loved watching them wrestle with their own doubts and thoughts about each other and themselves. I loved watching the difference in the way Jo thought compared to Janus. The strapline is 'A story about a child who couldn’t go to school'… I think lots of readers will understand why this book has grabbed my attention. The last time our daughter was attending school regularly (although not without issues) was May 2019. A lot has happened since then... more detail will be in my book due to be published later this year. This group of children are detached from schooling and unaccounted for within education enrolment systems. They are not considered to be school refusers. Estimates indicate that conservatively 50,000 school-aged Australian children are not just absent from school but are educationally disconnected and not enrolled in a school [5] Watterston, J., and O’Connell, M (2019) Those who disappear: The Australian education problem nobody wants to talk about’… Continue reading [6] Ibid School exclusion Kafka first studied chemistry at the Charles-Ferdinand University of Prague but after two weeks switched to law. This study offered a range of career possibilities, which pleased his father, and required a longer course of study that gave Kafka time to take classes in German studies and art history. At the university, he joined a student club, named Lese- und Redehalle der Deutschen Studenten, which organized literary events, readings, and other activities. In the end of his first year of studies, he met Max Brod, a close friend of his throughout his life, together with the journalist Felix Weltsch, who also studied law. Kafka obtained the degree of doctor of law on 18 June 1906 and performed an obligatory year of unpaid service as law clerk for the civil and criminal courts. University of South Australia. Despite first language, Kafka also spoke fluent Czech. Later, Kafka acquired some knowledge of the French language and culture from Flaubert, one of his favorite authors. Warning signs of school refusal may appear very gradually. At home, the symptoms can escalate at night but diminish once the child is sure they don’t have to go to school the next day. These signs include: Sid Halley is married, a father, and six-years retired from doing investigative work. Sir Richard Stewart approaches him asking that Sid look into race results that seem wrong. Although Sid is curious, he refuses but agrees to look over the information. However, the next day Sir Richard is found dead in his car of an apparent suicide and Sid receives a phone call, followed by escalating threats, demanding he sign a report of no wrong-doing…or else. This book is spicy in all the right ways. Being a woman in tech, you see the struggles of a woman trying to be taken seriously in the industry but what Jo struggles with most is her personal perception of herself. How much is she willing to sacrifice just to make sure she is taken seriously? Is she willing to sacrifice her love life because she is scared people are going to discount her business finesse and her spot at the table?

While they clearly on fire in the bedroom - or wherever! They are equally compatible at the keyboard. I love how Janus totally respects Jo’s knowledge and competency and defers to her expertise. Businesses that sell age-restricted products have legal responsibilities to ensure that they protect their customers who are underage. This is largely to do with safety as these products can be incredibly harmful to the health of people below the age of 18. I adore Janus and Jo soooo much! Jo has an delightfully quirky side and gives as good as she gets. And Janus may be Mr. Important, but he has a softer, more vulnerable side that just gets more appealing as layers are revealed. When Sid starts to investigate, the villain throws more trouble Sid's way. This time Sid is accused of abusing his child and taking pornographic pictures which were found in his garden shed. While that does cause a lot of trouble including the loss of his computer and cell phone and the necessity of moving to the Admiral's house, Sid perseveres. He feels that the only way his family will ever be safe is for him to get rid of the villain who is causing all the trouble. Can't Not Won't are words I have used many times over the past thirteen years since our youngest daughter was diagnosed with autism. It is a phrase commonly associated with Pathological Demand Avoidance but also relevant for the thousands of families with children who are finding it difficult to attend school. There are now over 37,000 members of the Not Fine in School Facebook group; parents, carers and people working with so many children who are struggling with the school environment, for a variety of reasons. Have you ever found yourself reading a really exceptional book and you find that you’re forcing yourself to slow down on your reading because you simply don’t want the book to end? That’s exactly how I felt.” Shannon Kuhn Writes School non-attendance is when a student simply stays at home instead of going to school. This may be because parents don’t reinforce the need to be at school or the student finds home more comfortable than school because they are involved in recreational activities such as watching television, playing video games, riding bikes, or playing. Non-attendance may occur with or without parent knowledge and it tends to be irregular or spasmodic. Students who are disconnected and not enrolled The Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation, Re-engaging School Refusers. https://www.rchfoundation.org.au/2018/02/reengaging-school-refusers/ It is not unusual for children to be reluctant to go to school from time to time. However, the effects of poor school attendance are cumulative and can impact engagement and lead to a decline in achievement. More serious than separation anxiety or being late to school on occasion, school refusal is often associated with a range of complex personal, family and school factors. It is accompanied by emotional distress such as anxiety and/or depression, physical symptoms and social isolation with the child usually remaining at home. School refusal generally requires support and intervention by a psychologist and others. Without appropriate support some chronic school refusers believe they just cannot go to school. This can be distressing for the child and family. [1] School Phobia/School Refusal Australia.
